Nielsen's Florist and Garden Shop finished first runner-up in the small business category of the National Family Business of the Year Awards, sponsored by Mass Mutual Financial Group. Nielsen's is a third generation family run business that has been a team effort since it was founded by Hilda and Christian Nielsen 60 Years ago. This family business award was the second for Nielsen's, as they were the first runner-up in the University of Connecticut's Nozko family Business of the Year Awards last year. The business is currently managed by Sandy Nielsen.

The business's financial success, marketing, succession plan community involvement and cohesiveness over the years all were considered by the judges.
"We only reward the cream of the crop," said Susan Glucksman, director of family business enterprise for Mass Mutual. Businesses can't apply unless they've been in business 25 years, at least two generations have been actively involved and they have a succession plan." |
| The Nielsen's were to have received their trophy in November, but the program was postponed because of the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks. |
