How do I care for my cut flowers?
As soon as you can cut, all flower stems at a sharp angle. Place the stems in a vase of tepid water with a few drops of bleach. The bleach will kill bacteria that will develop and the flower food provides immediate sugars that help lengthen the shelf life of the flowers.
How long do these flowers last?
That depends on the flowers, but on average the flowers should last roughly 4 to 7 days. Roses in bud last many days when all care instructions are followed. Bent necks or browning foliage may occur in roses. Bent neck is a sign of no water uptake. Usually re-cutting the stem will benefit the rose. Browning flower petals occur because of poor air circulation during the delivery process. Cleaning the outer petal (guard petals) will help prevent the browning from spreading to other petals inside the rose. For specific flowers, please call us or ask us when you are in the store.
How do I get my cut flower to open faster?
This answer includes all bulbs (Tulips, amaryllis, narcissi, hyacinth, lilies, etc.) and can be applied to most cut flowers without a woody stem. Local experts swear that putting the stem in hot water will only introduce the stem to bacteria buildup more rapidly than cold water will (even with bleach). So, in this case, give the stems a fresh cut at an angle in cold water with a dash of bleach. Place in a warm room, not in the window. Within two days, depending on the bulb and freshness of the stem, the flower should show color. To be very sure of color for a particular date, always plan ahead and do not wait for the last day.
What are some of the myths about caring for cut tulips?
As far as we have heard there are about 5 to 6 consistent myths. 1. Pennies in the water, the copper metal somehow prevented the tulips from stretching. Maybe at one time this worked but pennies are no longer made with copper metal significant enough to help your tulips. 2 If the tulip has a headache, give two aspirin. False, you only waste the pill when you can use it yourself on the hectic chaos of everyday life. 3. Tulips love the Russian vodka. False, I have seen professional designers swear by this but there is no proof of this addiction. 4. Tulips love the DEW! False, Mountain Dew and 7-UP! should only be consumed by Gen X , Y and Z. 5. Tulips love a warm bath. False, see the previous question, keep the water fresh and vase clean. 6. Tulips love the stage. TRUE, all tulips move because of light attraction, stem growth and gravity. You cannot stop nature from doing what it wants.
Why cut the stems at an angle?
This allows for the maximum amount of surface area to open for water intake. When in a vase , a straight cut will fall flat along the bottom eventually sealing the cut.
What do I do with the basket of flowers I just received?
Enjoy their beauty. To make them last as long as possible make sure the water level is always full to the top of the liner within the basket. A basic basket at the $50 price range will have about 30 stem insertions. The water level in an arrangement like that will be used up immediately by the flowers so please make sure to fill the basket liner daily.
